Indications of Astragalus root

Astragalus root enhances body functions and stimulates the immune system. It is indicated for :

  • Heavy spontaneous perspiration during the day
  • When you catch a cold easily
  • Shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • Weak digestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastric, uterine or anal prolapse
  • Chronic ulcers
  • Abscesses
  • Ascites
  • Edema

It also stops bleeding, such as uterine bleeding.

 

Instructions for use and dosage

Infusion :

9g of astragalus root can be taken as an infusion (use spring water). Break astragalus root slices into 2 or 4 pieces, and use the same 9g 3 times as an infusion.

Decoction (most commonly used for this herb):

1) Rinse the herbs in cold water, add 9g then heat the pan over high heat until boiling. As soon as the water is boiling, turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
4) Pour the liquid obtained into another container or thermos flask.
5) Pour 200ml (or just enough water to cover the herbs) of cold water over the same herbs and heat again over high heat, then turn down to low heat as soon as the water is boiling.
6) Simmer for 20 minutes.
7) Pour over the liquid obtained from the 1st decoction.
8) Drink the decoction hot or lukewarm in 2 batches, morning and afternoon.

The normal dosage range of Huang Qi is from 9 to 15g.

 

Combinations :

Astragalus root is associated with Chinese angelica root in cases of exhaustion due to blood loss, recalcitrant pustules or abscesses, and also by certain practitioners to increase the number of white and red blood cells in people undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

 

Contraindication :

 

Astragalus root is contraindicated for symptoms of heat or fire, such as :

  • Hot flashes
  • Red cheekbones or complexion
  • Dry mouth and throat day and night
  • Night sweats
  • Thirst

But also for acute infections such as flu, boils, fevers or digestive tract infections.

It should not be used for certain types of hypertension (check with a practitioner to find out).

Also contraindicated for pregnant or breast-feeding women (unless advised by your practitioner).

In some cases, astragalus root can cause skin eruptions (most often in people with very weak digestion).
