A word from David Brun
(Graduate of the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine)
Atractyl rhizome (Bái Zhú; 白术) is an essential herb in Chinese pharmacopoeia for tonifying the digestive system (the spleen/stomach pair) when moisture obstructs it. Large doses are sometimes used to treat certain types of constipation.
This herb is also used to calm the foetus when it is too agitated (in this case, it should only be used on prescription from a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner).
