Indication of the wild lotus seed heart in Chinese medicine
The heart of the seeds of lotus is indicated during :
- Mouth ulcers and/or on the tongue
- Hypertension (because the hearts have a vasodilator effect)
- Mental confusion or confused speech
- Hot flashes
- Mood swings
- Hypersensitivity of the body
- Insomnia
- Palpitations with anxiety, irritability or insomnia
- Spermatorrhea (must be powdered for this indication)
- Vomiting with the presence of blood (must be ground for this indication)
Properties according to Chinese medicine
- Drains the fire
- Stops bleeding
- Tie up the essence (Jing)
Instructions for use and dosage
Place 3g of lotus seed hearts in a large cup (a mug), fill it to 90% with simmering spring water (about 200-250ml). Cover the mug and let infuse for 10 minutes.
For spermatorrhea and vomiting with the presence of blood, the hearts should be ground with a coffee grinder before infusing as above. In powder form put only 1g.
Wild lotus seed heart combinations
– Combine with tea to promote urination and bowel movement (fights constipation).
– With honey to facilitate sleep and to relieve red eyes.
– With Chinese licorice (Gan Cao) for anxiety and mouth ulcers.
Contraindication
Lotus seed hearts are contraindicated for people with an abdominal mass (swelling of part of the stomach area), constipation, mild fever or severe digestive problems.

Lotus seed heart (蓮子心) is very bitter, it is often used in the treatment of mental confusion and delirium due to disease caused by pathogenic heat entering deep into the pericardium, but also for canker sores due to heart heat.
